Chocolate Ginger Raw Balls

Finding delicious dairy free desserts or protein snacks can be a challenge. I often find myself wistfully looking at the pretty bakery items through the window or getting frustrated when I can’t find a bar without milk when I need a quick bite to eat while at the airport. I realized a couple years ago that I have a milk protein allergy so eating treats with milk (which is in almost every dessert in Sweden) is something I have simply had to get past.

Luckily raw balls are making their stamp in the world & I have begun to see them more frequently at cafes or even in grocery stores! Dairy free desserts are actually very easy to make and there are an abundance of recipes for those of you wanting to replace dairy. I really love raw balls because I am usually satisfied after eating one and they can be a great mid-day snack, after work out bit or dessert.

Typically purchasing a raw ball while out is an expensive treat but if you keep certain ingredients on hand at home they can be an affordable addition to your wellness routine. Cacao is my fav so naturally my raw balls always have to have lots of it! Luckily cacao is a healthy superfood and will help to satisfy your chocolate craving by actually eating the true ingredient to chocolate without all the refined sugars & dairy products.

A fun way to jazz up your raw balls is to roll them in bee pollen or unsweetened coconut flakes. I chose to go with bee pollen which I recently purchased while on a trip to Spain! Bee pollen is rich in protein, free amino acids and vitamins. It is even said to help crash your cravings, contains enzymes to help aid your digestion, can help to fight seasonal allergies & it a natural energizer! I love to add it to my smoothies as well.

As the snow was falling earlier this week in Sweden, where I live, I decided to make some raw balls to help pass the time indoors. If you look closely, you can see tiny snow flakes on some of the balls 🙂 Try out the recipe below and let me know what you think! They are perfect for a Swedish fika which is when you drink coffee and typically enjoy a treat with a friend.


Chocolate Ginger Raw Balls

Satisfying chocolate ginger raw balls with no refined sugar, dairy-free & gluten-free. Perfect for an afternoon snack, dessert, or post-workout bite.

Servings 18 balls


  • 1 cup raw cashews
  • 1 cup cacao powder
  • 1 inch freshly peeled ginger
  • 13 pitted medjool dates
  • 1-2 tbsp bee pollen


  1. Mix all ingredients except for the bee pollen in a food processor or strong blender. 

  2. Pulse until it has become a thick dough (almost like doughy brownies) this usually takes 2 minutes depending on your blender/processor.

  3. When the dough is thick enough that it is sticking together & can be formed, take it out. Form the dough into medium sized balls by rolling between your hands. 

  4. Roll balls in bee pollen. Yields 18 medium sized balls. 

  5. Put in freezer for at least 20 minutes for them to set. 

  6. Store in airtight container in freezer or refrigerator & enjoy!
